GENDER AND DISASTER RISK FINANCE
While crises and disasters have an adverse impact across entire populations, the impact on women and girls is often disproportionality more devastating. During the month of October, the Global Risk Financing Facility (GRiF) focused its learning agenda on the impact of disaster risk finance on women and girls to bring attention to this differential, and to focus on women's contributions to the sector. This builds on GRiF's overarching commitment to focus on vulnerable populations, with a special consideration given to gender issues. Over the past year, GRiF commissioned the development of a Gender Action Plan to outline actions we can take to strengthen our capacity to deliver gender-informed solutions. The plan capitalizes on existing investments in knowledge, research, and learning made by the World Bank in promoting gender equity, and on the work program of the InsuResilience Centre of Excellence for Gender-smart Solutions. Together with our partners, GRiF strives to create a more inclusive and equitable approach to climate and disaster risk finance.

GRiF Technical Talk #5: Women in Risk Finance
As part of our emphasis on gender, this past month's Technical Talks webinar on October 26, 2021, focused on women in risk finance. The event featured five lightning presentations on financial solutions including risk pools, catastrophe bonds, disaster risk finance funds, credit guarantee schemes, as well as the role safety nets can play to enable post-shock flow of funds. All presentations demonstrated how gender can be integrated in the design and implementation of these financial solutions. This was followed by a panel discussion with representatives from IFRC - Anticipation Hub, InsuResilience Center for Excellence on Gender-smart Solutions, and AXA, who offered perspectives on how they are working toward integration of gender considerations in their projects and operations. More than 190 people from 51 countries registered for the event, which featured opening remarks by Josefine Greber of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
